01 · Progress needs a before and an after

Without a baseline, improvement is a mood.

02 · The proxy is not the thing

Revenue may proxy demand. Time-on-page may proxy attention. A score may proxy learning. None is the underlying phenomenon.

03 · The measure can change behaviour

Once a target becomes important, people adapt around it.

04 · Context moves too

A better number in a different environment may not describe a better system.

05 · Keep the remainder

What did the metric make easier to see? What did it make easier to ignore?

If the number improved, what else must be true before you call it progress?

Margin note

A metric is a window. It is never the whole room.
